Holi spreads its colors from north to the southernmost state of India, the Tamil Nadu. Here people uniquely celebrate the festival. Let’s know what it is.
Holi 2020 in Tamil Nadu:
The southern state of India, Tamil Nadu, knows Holi with the name of Kamavilas, Kaman Pandigai, or Kama-Dahanam. Let’s see the specialty of this festival here.
The center of celebration:
Holi is the celebration in tribute to the Lord Kamadeva in Tamil Nadu. So people sing and dance to tell the tale of Kamadeva. This way, they pay tribute to the legend.
Story of Kamadeva in Tamil Nadu:
Kamadeva is the God of Love. He passes by the woods in the spring season along with his arrows and a bow made of sugarcane. He aims the arrows to those who cross his path. Which goes into their heart to enlighten love into it.
When Lord Shiva was sad and started meditation because of the suicide of Sati, who loved Shiva but her father Daksha doesn’t like him. With that, the daughter of mountains Parwati also started meditation because she wanted to make Shiva her husband. But Shiva has no interest in life and the world now.
All the Gods were concerned about Shiva and Parvati. So they asked Kamadeva to shoot Shiva with his arrow. So that he can come back to his original life and marry Parvati. When Kamadeva did this, Shiva opened his third eye, and Kamadeva was burnt to ashes. In return, when Shiva looked at Parwati, he understood her love, and they both were married.
Then Kamadeva’s wife Rati asked Shiva for mercy. Shiva restored the soul of Kamadeva, who can remain with Rati but with no physical presence. So the day when Kamadeva was back to life is the day of celebration of Holi.
